Food Swaps to Keep Weight Loss Momentum at Christmas

I've lost 90 pounds now and trust me it's hard to stay the diet course during the holidays. I am going to Louisiana to see our daughter in Cajun country. She and son in law are uber par cooks. I will be wined and dined with gumbo, mufaletta, etouffee, courtbouillon, boudin, po boys, beignets, plus all the northern goodies daughter learned to make at home--baklava, almond cookies, stained glass window cookies etc. It will be a diet blitzkrieg. If you want to keep up weight loss momentum during the holidays, here are simple tweaks and food swaps  Simple Diet Tweaks to Keep Weight Loss Momentum in Christmas Feasting

Coconut Oil and Cinnamon Supplements Aid Weight Loss

I weighed 110 pounds when I got married. Four children later, I weighed 134 pounds. I always shed the pregnancy weight by nursing and chasing kids. But I put on 100 pounds after losing two stillborn babies and taking the antidepressant Paxil (paroxetine). I developed cholesterol, sugar and liver problems.

18 months ago, I got serious about dieting. I have lost 93 pounds and dropped from size 20 to size 4-6. I write a Diet-tip-of-the-day post to share how I lost weight. Today's tip: try coconut oil and cinnamon supplements.

Diet Tip Getting Down to Size 4 Takes (Lots of) Patience

I have lost 93 pounds and dropped 7-8 sizes. I had to return some size 6 pants I'd bought because they were too large. After wearing as large as a size 20, I can tell you that felt incredible. I write Diet-tip-of-the-day posts to show How-I-lost-weight and today's tip is give it time and patience.

Juicers Save Money and Make Healthy Juices for Dieters

I am thinking about buying a juicer and need input. Do you have one? Do you like it? Do you use it (honestly, do you? I don't need another appliance that really isn't useful). What brand do you have and what did it cost (if that's not too personal). Does it really save that much money? I found several for around $75 with tax.   Should I Get a Juicer?

Why I Use Fruit Diet Supplements, Natural Fat Burners

I have recently lost a lot of weight--88 pounds altogether. And I dropped six to seven clothing sizes. I've cut calorie intake to 1,000 to 1,450 per day. I practice portion control. I also take natural fat burner supplements. I've gotten some criticism for taking "diet pills. Here's why and how-I-lost-weight doing it.   Why I Use Fruit Diet Supplements, Natural Fat Burners

Dealing with Picky Eaters, When It Goes Beyond Food

Parents, are you troubled by picky eater kids? It's normal for children to dislike a few foods, but not every other thing you put on their plate. Here's what to consider if junior is turning up his nose at everything. This is part of a series and the first is to consider health issues. I'm putting this on my diet blog in hopes that it will help prevent eating disorders, weight problems and food phobias.  Parent Tips for Picky Eater Kids, Part Two--Health Issues

Diet Bread Recipes Breakfast Cereal Bread Machine Loaf

I'm Chef in Chief around here. I demand that my recipes be frugal, nutritious and use up leftovers. Today's +Dietrecipeoftheday and +Daily-deal-of-the-day combines these. Leftover Breakfast Cereal Use Up Bread.

Don't you hate it when the family opens multiple boxes of cereal and lets them go stale? Well, I've outsmarted them. I recycle that cereal into bread. Even stale cereal can be repurposed. I've used Bran Buds, Grape-Nuts, Cheerios and Life cereals all successfully. I think most any cereal could work with a little tweaking. I use up other food too. Why Losing Weight is Harder than Quitting Smoking

I have 14 pounds left to lose to get off 100 pounds. And I am sick of reading how easy it is to lose. There are easier ways and things that work better, but shedding 86 pounds was not easy. Dieting is like quitting an addiction, except harder. I will argue food is the hardest addiction to break. For one thing, diet takes longer. You can stop smoking or drinking and start seeing positive effects almost immediately. And you don't carry around outward evidence of your addiction--fat. It takes months to see progress and years to get all the weight off. I don't write this to discourage, but to remind you that if you have lost pat yourself on the back. If you're still working on it, don't listen to those naive ones who make is sound simple. It's hard work and you deserve high praise for trying.

Diet Recipe of the Day Shrimpy Seafood Alfredo

I've lost 85 pounds (86 if you look at my scale juust right :). I also cook for a good sized crew and don't have time to make special diet recipes. And I'm too cheap to buy special diet food. Soo, I tweak family meals. I write about these recipes and +How-I-lost-weight in my +Diet recipe of the day. Today's is Diet Recipe of the Day Shrimpy Seafood Alfredo

I have lost about 82 pounds since 2011. I still have 20 pounds to go (or until I can shed the back fat and belly fat). My +Diet-strategies are to ruthlessly cut calories, fat, sugar, starch and salt. Each day I submit a diet recipe of the Diet Recipe of the Day: Super C Chicken Salad

Diet Tip of the Day: Small Meals and Snacks

I've lost 82 pounds (yippee! *mar runs around in circles like small dog*) Photo on left is this summer and on right is last summer (about 40 pounds heavier). But the point of this post is not to brag. It's to share how I lost weight. Losing weight is like quitting and addiction and different. It takes longer to notice change. So we dieters need things to keep us motivated.  Every day I try to share a diet recipe or tip of the day on Bubblews. Today's tip has been suggested by smarter people than I for a long time: eat six small meals and snacks a day rather than fewer large ones. Diet Plan, Food Choices that Helped Me Lose 80 Pounds

I can't believe it. I've only got 20 pounds left to lose to hit my 100-pound weight loss goal. Left is me now. Right photo is two years ago. Sometimes it seemed the weight would never come off. I started dieting about two years ago, but got serious 10 months ago. I tried every eating strategy, except crash diets. I want to develop new healthy eating habits. As I've learned, I've tweaked my diet plan. That's paid off. I'm losing more each week. Here's the menu I followed to lose the first 70 pounds. I eat six small meals daily, totaling 1,350 calories. Since writing this I added a few supplements: apple cider vinegar, garcinia cambogia (from Dollar Tree) African Mango, acai and billberry. They're all natural fruit and plant supplements, FDA approved and available from regular grocery stores. They areDiet Plan, Food Choices that Helped Me Lose 70 Pounds

My Weight Loss Journey--Before and After Photos

I have lost somewhere around 76 pounds since 2011. I put on 100 pounds after losing babies 5 and 6. I couldn't breastfeed to get the weight off as I had before. I fell into depression, ate and drank too much and took an antidepressant. All of these packed on the pounds.

I just posted some pictures on Facebook. Our son in Detroit (who we see every few months) called me to say he'd noticed how much I'd lost since even since the last time he saw me. I don't say this to brag, but to encourage you if you are working on weight loss. And I say it to encourage myself so I don't give up (I still have 25 pounds or so left to go). I don't want to go back to old eating habits either. I'm going to post a series of pictures taken at different points in my weight gain and loss journey.   My Weight Loss Journey--Before and After Photos

Raspberry Ketones Helped Me Burn Fat, Diet, Lose Weight

I've been dieting for over a year and seriously dieting since November. I've lost about 75 pounds and have 25 left to go. I haven't used drugs or surgery. I have tried and found success with supplements. One I swear by is raspberry ketones (sometimes spelled as just "ketone"). Dr. Oz recommended it (see article link below) and I have confidence in his advice. Here's how it helped me (that's me, same shirt, July 2013 and August, 2011).  Raspberry Ketones Helped Me Burn Fat, Diet, Lose Weight

Diet Recipe of the Day Yogurt Parfait

I've lost about 75 pounds since last year. I don't say this to brag but to give encouragement to others on a weight loss quest. I thought you might like to know what I eat to lose weight. Yes, I said eat. I know, we're used to thinking of dieting in terms of what not to eat. But I need a positive spin if I'm to conquer this fat. So I talk "can" not "can't." Plus-Size Fashion: From Faux-Pas to Fabulous

I've been wearing plus-size clothes since 2004. I lost two stillborn babies and couldn't shed weight. I was depressed and didn't care what I wore. Money was tight and fashion was an easy place to skimp. Consequently, my wardrobe resembled post-garage sale dumpster. I've since lost weight and am back in regular sizes. My mood is improving too. Combating depression, I discovered, meant taking pride in my attire, whatever the size. Here's how to take fat-clothes fashion from faux-pas to fabulous.Plus-Size Fashion: From Faux-Pas to Fabulous

Health Problems I Lost After Losing Weight

I've lost 71 pounds gained. I didn't crash-diet. I cut fat, transfat, sugar, high-fructose corn syrup, cholesterol, sodium, carbohydrates, starch and meat. Happily, losing weight lost health problems too. High LDL Cholesterol: My low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol wasn't dangerously high, but it was getting there. Losing just 20 pounds got it down. I hadn't even started seriously dieting yet. What worked was cutting transfat and hydrogenated fat, eating less fat overall and switching to olive oil for cooking. Taking Omega-3 helps. I changed to light olive oil margarine and mayonnaise, nonfat milk and yogurt. I cut dairy, spreads and fat-based condiments. 90 percent of my protein intake is fish, chicken breast and lamb. I rarely eat beef or pork.Health Problems I Lost After Losing Weight

Low Calorie, Low-Fat Superfood Entree Recipes, Cheap and Easy

I'm dieting to lose 100 pounds. It's a journey, but I'm down 71 pounds. Along the way, I've created and tweaked recipes to subtract calories and fat and add superfoods (fruit, vegetables, lean meat, alternative protein). Here are homemade low-cal, low-fat entrees that are cheap and quick.

Super Slimming Sweet and Sour: Heat olive oil (one teaspoon per serving). Dice and saute your favorite lean meat. Chicken breast is lowest in calories with 100 per 4-ounce serving. Or or use fish: salmon, cod, pollock or yellow fin tuna steaks. Or try tofu or miso for a vegetarian option. Add diced sweet potatoes, onions, multi-colored peppers, purple cabbage, leeks, pea pods and broccoli. Season with celery seed, garlic, Bragg's Liquid Amino (healthy soy sauce alternative), lemon juice, red pepper and ginger. Cook just till meat is done. Add a cup of orange or apple juice and pineapple bits.  Low Calorie, Low-Fat Superfood Entree Recipes, Cheap and Easy

How Fat People Are Bullied, Shamed

"Fat" is one of the most common words in the English language. It's used mostly-negatively to describe, ridicule, shame, preach and value-judge. Being overweight myself, it seems fat people get more than their share of bullying. In college special education classes, we discussed the danger of labeling kids. It pigeon holes them and sets up unhealthy behavioral expectations. Kids get trapped in the parameters superimposed by labels. That concern about labeling doesn't carry over to fat people. Being tagged fat is inescapable, like wearing a brand name or badge you can't take off. Even if we lose weight, if society deems us still-too-fat, the persona follows us.  How Fat People Are Bullied, Shamed

Diet Tips: Chronicle Weight Loss in Pictures

I don't like having my picture taken. I've never found a friend in the camera. Since I put on 100 pounds, I'm particularly photo-shy. In dieting, though, I find that seeing pictures of myself motivates me to lose weight and keep it off. Here's how I do it. Start with acceptance. It's not a schmaltzy platitude to say that weight loss begins and ends with accepting myself as I am. I may not like what I see in the mirror, but I have to love myself. If I don't, I won't have the desire or ambition to lose weight. Why bother to change what's outside when I don't like the inside?  Diet Tips: Chronicle Weight Loss in Pictures

Natural Antidepressants, Anti-Anxiety Supplements

I've always struggled with panic attacks, anxiety, depression, PMS (premenstrual syndrome) and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms. I lost two second trimester infants and started menopause early, at about 45. For seven years, I took antidepressants. These made me feel disoriented and numb. I also put on 100 pounds (which certainly didn't help the depression!) I weaned myself several years ago and now use natural supplements to combat negative feelings and boost emotional health. Here's my daily mental health regimen.  Natural Antidepressants, Anti-Anxiety Supplements

Diet Vegan, Vegetarian Recipes for Lent

During lent, much of the world practices fasting. Whether we choose a physical fast, such as food or drink or a spiritual fast, such as refraining from gossip or internet use, our goal is improved spiritual health and closeness with our Heavenly Father. Most Catholic individuals and households observe some sort of lenten food fast. In the old church, Mardi Gras or Fat Tuesday was known as Shrove Tuesday. All sweeteners, dairy products, oil and eggs were used up and made into pancakes and during lent, not only was no meat eaten, but also no dairy products. The closest diet to this kind of fasting is a vegan diet, except that the vegan eats no fish.  The Lenten Kitchen: Vegan and Vegetarian Recipes

Diet Foods I'll Keep Eating After I Lose Weight

I've been dieting to lose 100 pounds gained after a stint on antidepressants. It's a long, tedious battle and I'm about half way there. That's me after 54 pounds lost. After I get all the weight off, there are some diet foods I'll never touch again--like reduced calorie salad dressing and Kashi Go Lean cereal! Blech! Other foods I'm going to keep eating to maintain weight loss. They taste no different and have less than half the calories. Diet Foods I'll Keep Eating After I Lose Weight

Fruit, Vegetable Switches to Cut Calories, Lose Weight

In dieting, it's important to eat fruits and vegetables. But fruits and veggies aren't created equal. Some impact weight loss and gain more than others. In my diet journey, I'm looking for the most nutritional bang for my caloric investment. I also need foods that satisfy hunger. Here are fruit and vegetable food swaps to cut calories, curb hunger, speed weight loss and improve health. Fruit Switches to Cut Calories, Lose Weight

Fat Tuesday Feasting Makes Ash Wednesday Fasting Harder

I'm a Catholic: well not cradle Catholic-- I'm a convert. One thing I love about being Catholic is that we sure know how to celebrate life. Take Fat Tuesday (aka Mardi Gras): it's a huge Catholic lollapalooza before the solemnity of Ash Wednesday and Lent. All good Catholics, it seems gear up for the penitential season by overdoing it in the party season. I have my doubts about the wisdom of this. Mardi Gras binging is disastrous for dieting, too. I say, for best weight loss, Nix Fat Tuesday Binges

Watch How You Eat, Not Just What to Lose Weight

I'm about halfway toward my goal to lose 80 pounds. It's been a journey--I've learned many things about dieting. Along with watching what I eat, I'm learning to watch how I eat. Being mindful of eating habits has helped me emotionally and physically. Here are bad eating habits to stop, to lose weight. I've listed healthier ones to replace them with.  Eating Habits to Lose Weight

Dieting one day at a time

I'm not so inclined to eat for comfort. My way is to stop eating when I feel miserable. Food just doesn't taste good. I eat more when I'm happier. That's when I feel hungry. But avoiding eating is just as bad as overeating or binging. When I don't eat I get shaky and feel nauseous. Sometimes eating helps and sometimes, like now, I just feel sicker. But I think that depends on what I eat. I had a South Beach Diet fiber bar for breakfast. I think that was too much sugar, even though it had protein too. Then again I took a lot of vitamins all at once. That and my husband is in one of "those moods" (oh the joys of a WAHM). In totus, I feel queasy. But I still believe eating something when I feel stressed helps: just not something too sugary, salty  or acidic. The trick is to monitor how I feel and what works, adjusting as I learn new things. As the old saying goes, One day at a time.
